Regulation of the International Singing Competition
This competition, organized by the Festival Lyrique en Marmandais as part of the Nuits Lyriques, is open to candidates of all nationalities and aims to promote young operatic singers. It includes of two categories. Candidates may apply in one or two categories :
1 – OPERA : In this category, light or comic operas and operetta are allowed if they make possible for candidates to prove their vocal skills and musical interpretation abilities.
2 – FRENCH MELODIES
The registration criteria for both categories are as follows :
Øhave been born after 31 August 1987 and before 26 August 2002. Exceptional derogations may be granted. Any request for derogation will be examined, individually, by the President of the organising association, who is sovereign in his decision.
Øpresent a detailed CV of his/her professional and/or training experience. The organisers reserve the right to accept or refuse an application. They are not required to justify their decision, which is final.
Øhave submitted a complete registration file (with all supporting documents) and paid the registration fee for the chosen category (ies) before the deadline set by these regulations.
Additionnal requirements for both categories :
ØOnly registered candidates whose applications have been accepted (confirmation of registration sent by the Competition, as proof) will be admitted to the competition.
ØTo participate in the qualifying rounds, regularly registered singers must attend the reception of the candidates, the presentation of the Jury and the group photo on the first day of the competition, at 9:00 am, at the ESPACE-EXPO.
ØThe candidate’s registration implies full acceptance of these rules and any changes that may occur between the sending of their application and the date of the competition. In case of dispute, only the version written in French and posted in the theatre on the day of the competition will be authoritative.
ØA candidate who has obtained a first prize in a category of this competition or the Grand Prize in previous years may no longer compete in that category.
ØEngagement contracts may be proposed to candidates, winners or not, to participate in the Nuits Lyriques de Marmande (edition 2021 or following) or in the association’s other productions.
ØAll members of the Jury are likely to offer commitments to candidates or assist in their promotion.
ØThe organizing association develops specific partnerships with other competitions or lyrical structures (Canada, Mexique, Chine, Biélorussie). Such partnerships may derogate from one or more points of this Regulation, without candidates being able to complain about it or be harmed in any way.
ØFor all points not provided for in these rules, any possible additions or modifications of the rules and, more generally, any questions raised during the conduct of the competition, the organising association is, in the end, sovereign and sole decision-maker. Its decisions are final.
An entry fee (see amount on attached entry form) is required, per category, for each candidate if he/she wishes to participate in the competition. This fee must be paid, in Euros, at the time of registration and forms an integral part of the application. For European and foreign candidates, mandates, transfers, etc… must include additional management and/or commission costs. The net amount received by the organizing association must correspond to the registration fees. Once the candidate’s registration has been confirmed by the Competition at the time of submission of the application, the registration fee is no longer refundable and remains valid, even if the candidate is absent (for whatever reason) and even if the candidate’s participation is called into question for non-compliance with one of the clauses of these rules.
The complete file (to be sent before 15 of July 2020 last deadline) must include the following documents:
ØAn artistic curriculum vitae (training and professional activities)
Ø2 photographs obligatorily in identity format (width 35 mm – height 45 mm)
ØA photocopy of the identity document
ØRegistration fees (or proof of payment)
ØConfirmation of registration will be sent to the candidate upon receipt of the complete file.
Candidates will be accompanied exclusively by piano; no other form of accompaniment will be accepted (other than piano, recorded musical medium, etc.). A cappella singing will not be accepted except in the case where all or part of a piece has been written by the composer. Several accompanying pianists are provided by the organizers (at no extra cost to the candidates). Each candidate may be accompanied by his own pianist (at his own expense). The Association does not organize rehearsals with the accompanying pianists before the Competition events.
For pianists, candidates must provide the piano/song scores, legible and in good condition, of the works they have chosen. The organizers reserve the right to cancel the participation of a candidate who is unable to provide his scores or if one of them proves unreadable or unusable by the pianist. French law prohibits the use of illegal photocopies of scores or printouts via the Internet. The candidate would be held responsible if he or she contravenes these rules.
WORKS PROGRAMME FOR EACH ROUND
Candidates may not sing the same piece twice. The works must be performed without score.
In their application form, each candidate proposes a programme of 5 tunes, at least one of which must be in French. At the end of the tests, the candidates must have interpreted at least 1 tune in French. Transpositions are prohibited (except when they are customary or planned by the composer). French translation is allowed for Viennese operettas. The programme indicated on the registration form may exceptionally be modified up to three weeks before the start of the playoffs. Any such modification must be duly notified in writing to the organisers.
FRENCH MELODY :
French melody is a musical form for voice and piano, composed on a poetic text written and sung in French. In this category, songs and romances are not accepted, especially those from the repertoire generally related to variety. In case of doubt about the definition of the work, candidates may refer to the repertoire of the Centre International de la Mélodie Française in order to check whether the title or titles they intend to interpret are included in it. The directory is available free of charge on the Internet at: www.melodiefrancaise.com
In their application form, each candidate proposes a programme of 5 French melodies. In case of a cycle of melodies, only one melody is sung in the preselection and semi-final, even if it is shorter than the time limit. In the rare case of very short melody cycles (e.g. Poulenc’s Bestiaire), it is possible to interpret several melodies of the same cycle, while remaining within the time limit.
ORGANISATION OF THE COMPETITION
All rounds take place at the ESPACE-EXPO : RN 113 – Route de Bordeaux 47200 MARMANDE – FRANCE
The order of performance will be drawn by lot and will remain the same throughout the competition. Candidates must evaluate their schedule in order to present themselves in the posted order. Each candidate is responsible for his or her punctuality, time management and order of business. The schedules and written indications posted by the organizers must be strictly respected. A candidate who is absent at the time of his passage loses the possibility of competing in this event and will therefore be excluded from the competition. Only the Jury can decide to reinstate him/her in the competition and choose to hear him/her at any time. Before each test, candidates must present their candidate card.
The deliberations of the Preselections Commitee, Juries of Professionals and High School students are secret. Their decisions are sovereign and without appeal.
Simple clothing is accepted for the playoffs and semi-final. For the final, a gala outfit is required.
The winners will receive a Prize and a diploma. If they so wish, the other candidates will receive, on request, a certificate of participation in the competition, mentioning the level of the test they have reached. A candidate’s interpretation may be interrupted if the time limit is exceeded.
The competition is divided into three phases: Preselections – Semi-final – Final
The preselections will be made internally, by a restricted Jury, during the 2 days preceding the semi-final. All the Jury members will be present from the semi-finals onwards.
The candidate interprets 1 piece chosen from the program he has proposed in his application.
Maximum duration of the song : 4 minutes (Only one cute is allowed).
The candidate sings 1 piece that he chooses from the works proposed in his program and that he has not already performed. Maximum duration of the song : 6 minutes (Only one cute is allowed). If necessary, a second aria may be requested by the Jury.
The candidate must perform 2 pieces. The first one he chooses from the tunes of his program that he has not yet performed. The second one that the Jury chooses from the tunes in its program and that the candidate has not yet sung. In the OPERA category, the Jury reserves the right to sing only one song if the number of finalists exceeds a dozen. In this case, the tune performed will be chosen by the Jury.
Maximum duration of each piece : 8 to 10 minutes
DIRECT ADMISSION TO THE SEMI-FINALS
The 2019 finalists in a category are admitted directly to the semi-finals of the same category in 2020. Candidates from other competitions, having a partnership with Marmande (Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques au Canada, Concurso San Miguel au Mexique, Concours de Chant de Minsk, Concours de chant en Chine), can go directly to the semi-finals. However, all candidates admitted directly to the semi-finals may, however, upon their duly expressed request, compete in the preselections.
